In the church, we have been taught that performance is wrong. That it’s arrogant, it is self-centered, and there is no room for it in leading worship! Well, I have a slightly different take on that.

You just finished writing your new worship song…now what? Your brand new worship song is now complete. It expresses everything that was in your heart to say. Now you’re ready to share it with the world…or perhaps first with your worship team at church, and then see where it goes from there.

So, you’ve looked at your audience – who’s out there listening to you. And once you know who they are, the next step in “getting a vision for your show” is to look at your songs.

At the Men’s Prayer Breakfast tomorrow morning, Pastor Nolan is planning a brief message on Courage. He just rented the movie Gods and Generals and was very moved by the scene that shows General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson addressing the Confederate troops prior to battle. So Pastor Nolan asked his media volunteer to cue up the scene so he could use it as an illustration during his message.

Most people think planning makes a show boring, less creative. They’re “artists,” after all, and real artists are spontaneous, or led, or....
In reality, the planning process is one of the most creative parts of a great show! It’s where you, as an artist, have the opportunity to turn the music of a show into an emotional experience for the audience.

We all know what a great show looks like. But what does a great rehearsal look like? It isn’t just running through all the songs, putting them in some kind of order, and then going out to do your show! The rehearsal is the place where spontaneity happens, believe it or not. “I’m just a band guy”. That was my attitude when I volunteered to play on the worship team at my church almost twenty years ago. I wasn’t really interested in being up front, charged with the responsibility to talk to the congregation let alone “lead” them in some way. That all seemed pretty intimidating, and quite frankly- a hassle. Yeah, that’s right, dealing with people can be a hassle. And so I was content to show up with my guitar rig and dutifully play the appropriate parts behind our Pastor who artfully encouraged worship from the platform.

It’s pretty common for singers and musicians to think that their audience has come to hear these “great songs” that they’re going to play! Singer/songwriters especially feel that it’s all about the song. But it’s not.

Psalm 40:1-6
1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.
4 Blessed is the man
who makes the LORD his trust,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false gods.
5 Many, O LORD my God,
are the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for us
no one can recount to you;
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to declare.
6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but my ears you have pierced;
burnt offerings and sin offerings
you did not require.
